Lake Shore Drive Apartment
A modernist renovation of a pre-war 1920s apartment in Chicago for a young family.

New life was given to a formerly outdated pre-war apartment by using a modern approach to preserving the unit’s historic architectural character, while adapting the unit to the needs of a young family. The use of a thoughftully selected shade of white paint throughout amplified daylight, celebrating the original Art Deco details of the unit while also framing views of Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan.

Contrast was used whenever possible including color, material, and furnishings. Framed openings, including a set of steel and glass doors, create a layering of spaces that feels open, yet supports multiple uses and provides varying degrees of privacy.

Designed with young children in mind, finishes and furnishings were selected to be safe, durable, and easy to clean.
